Trio of Cedar wrestlers still have chance

NORFOLK — After quarterfinal-round action here Friday, Cedar Catholic’s Andrew Lorenz still had a chance at earning the District title and advancing to next week’s State Class C Wrestling Tournament in Omaha.

Two other Cedar wrestlers, Tyler Loberg and Dalton Lammers, were also still in contention for advancing to the State Tournament as of 7 p.m. Friday.

After the first day of competition, Cedar Catholic was in 16th place with 17 team points. Defending state champion Madison is the Day 1 tourney leader with O’Neill in second.

Lorenz, 26-3 on the year, entered the tournament as the second seed. The Cedar  220-pounder earned a first-round bye to advance to the quarterfinals. He then pinned Wakefield’s Daniel Muller in 1:21 to advance to Saturday’s competition.

Lorenz will face O’Neill’s Thomas Schipporeit Saturday. The winner of that match will then advance to wrestle for the title against either  top-seed Houson Huss of Stanton or Lutheran High Northeast’s Evan Wookman.

Loberg, 27-13,  entered the tourney as the fifth seed.

He started the District competition off with an easy first period pin over Logan View’s Jessi Meyer. Loberg then fell to O’Neill’s Spencer Knobb, losing in a second-period pin.

The loss sent Loberg into the wrestle backs, where he earned a second-period pin over Laurel-Concord/Coleridge’s Ben Barelman.

Loberg must pick up two more wins Saturday in order to advance to the State Tourney. He will square off against Gabe Fraher of Scribner-Snyder/West Point Guardian Angels in his first match of the day.

Lammers earned a first-round bye, but then fell to West Point Beemer’s Tristan Bettenhausen in a first-period pin. Lammers bounced back in the wrestlebacks with a second-period pin over Mathew Reeves of Lutheran High Northeast. Lammers must pick up two more wins Saturday in order to advance to next week’s State Tourney. He will square off against Laurel-Concord/Coleridge’s Drew Lunz in his first match of the day.
