State-rated St. Mary’s dominates Blue Devils

O’NEILL — The Wynot Blue Devils lost 46-0 to the speedy St. Mary’s Cardinals Friday.
St. Mary’s dominated both sides of the ball and rolled up a 397-128 yardage advantage.
O’Neill would pick off five interceptions and recover three fumbles for the game. Tait Sibbel had a big night for the Cardinals as he rushed 14 times for 138 yards and went 10 for 14 passing for 189 yards, for 307 yards of total production. Jared Tomjack also had a pair of scores for the Cardinals.

Jackson Sudbeck rushed for 29 yards and Koby Sudbeck finished with 27 yards on nine carries. Nathan Wieseler lead the defense with 11 tackles and Chris Schmidt had eight stops on the night.
The Cardinals did not take long to get on the scoreboard. After recovering a Blue Devil fumble on the 15 yard line it took only three plays to reach paydirt. Tait Sibbel quarterback sneaked in from the two yard line. Jared Tomjack ran in the PAT and O’Neill lead 8-0.
The Blue Devils moved the ball to mid-field on their second offensive set. The Cardinals picked off a short pass and, after a 20-yard return, were in business on offense again. Tait Sibbel hit Ty Eller with a nine-yard scoring strike. Sibbel ran in the PAT and the Cardinals increased their lead to 18-0.
The Blue Devils then put together their best drive of the night. They pushed the ball deep into Cardinal territory before another interception, this one at the three yard-line, stoppped the drive. St. Mary’s would drive the length of the field for another score. Tait Sibbel capped the drive with a 21-yard run down the left sideline. Sibbel also bulled in for the PAT and the first quarter ended with the Cardinals leading 24-0.
The Blue Devils kept throwing the ball to wrong colored jerseys in the second quarter.
Jared Tomjack picked off an errant pass and gave the Cards another short field. The Cardinals would capitalize when Tomjack capped the drive with a five-yard run. Sibbel hit Tomjack for the PAT and O’Neill was crusing 32-0.
Koby Sudbeck broke free up the middle 65 yards to the endzone for the Devils, but it was called back on a penalty. The drive stalled and Sibbel continued to star for the Cards as he bolted 56 yards to score. Sibbel added the PAT and the Cards were up 40-0.
Another fumble by the Blue Devils gave the Cardinals one more chance just before the half. Sibbel connected with Connor Connot for a three-yard touchdown. The PAT run was stopped and O’Neill went into the intermission leading 46-0.
The Devil defense played better in the second half but the offense continued to struggle and the second half was a scoreless affair. Wynot fell to 2-4, while St. Mary’s improved to 6-0.
