Osmond surprises Lady Devils

WAUSA — The Osmond Tigers upset the Wynot Lady Blue Devils 36-34 in the semifinal round of the Lewis and Clark Tournament Friday.
The Lady Tigers earned revenge for a 20-point loss earlier in the season as they clogged up the middle with their 2-3 zone and the Lady Devils perimeter shooting was uncharacteristically cold.

The Lady Blue Devils connected on only 3-20 three-pointers for the game. Osmond also got to the line more often and held an 18-3 advantage in free throws.
Osmond advanced to play Homer on Monday in the Conference final at Laurel.
Brianna Kumm contributed 13 points and eight rebounds to the Lady Tigers winning cause but it was Laurel Krohn who was the real thorn in the Blue Devils’ side as she drove through the Wynot press all night and created a lot of match-up problems. Krohn would finish with 12 points and nine assists in the game.
Bailey Kuchta would lead the Lady Blue Devils as she just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
“We had a lot of open looks early but just couldn’t get the shots to fall,” said Wynot coach Steve Wieseler.
The basket had a lid on it in the first quarter for both teams. Brianna Kumm drained a three- pointer for the Lady Tigers and Osmond took a 6-3 lead.
The Lady Blue Devils started to find the range in the second quarter. Wynot would hold Osmond to a single fieldgoal and threes by Ashley Heine and Shelby Wieseler helped them tie the game at halftime, 14-14.
Wynot got a three-pointer by Kattie Savoy and fieldgoals by Ashley Heine and Bailey Kuchta in the third quarter but scoring was tough. Osmond got six points on the inside from Paige Schuettler and a field goal by Carissa Gutz as they went on a 13-7 run to lead 27-21.
Wynot would finally gain the lead late in the final quarter thanks to eight points by Bailey Kuchta and a couple of pentration drives and lay-ins by Maggie Schulte.
Laurel Krohn hit a three- pointer and a freethrow to tie the game at 34. With 11 seconds to play Krohn drove the left baseline and hit a short floater to give the Tigers the lead. Wynot had a couple of chances to tie the game, but couldn’t get the shots to fall and Osmond earned the 36-34 upset win.
