Lady Devils are one win from State

HARTINGTON —  The Wynot Lady Blue Devils advanced one more step Thursday on their crusade to get back to the state tournament.

The Lady Devils rolled over the Newcastle Raiders to win their SubDistrict and now will play Mullen at Bassett next Friday with a trip to the big dance on the line.

Wynot ran up big numbers in the first two quarters Thursday as they cruised to a 36-10 haftime lead and never looked back as they went on to crush the Raiders 65-29.

Wynot’s record improved to 22-3 with the win, while Newcastle’s season came to an end at 8-14.

The Blue Devil offense was clicking on all cyclinders as 11 players scored in this one, led by Maggie Schulte with 17 points and Shelby Wieseler’s 11 point effort.

Newcastle got solid play on the inside from Devin Jacobs with nine points and Shelby

Olson contributed eight points to the Raiders’ cause.

Ten points by Maggie Schulte and four points from Haley Gowery got Wynot off to a fast 17-7 lead. Devin Jacobs had five points for the Raiders.

A pair of three pointers by Shelby Wieseler and five points from Samantha Wieseler kept Wynot rolling in the second as a 19-3 run put the Raiders in a big hole 36-10 at the half.

Shelby Olsen hit a trey and scored six third- quarter points for Newcastle and Kate Kniefl also drained a pair of fieldgoals for the Lady Raiders. Wynot, however, was rolling as they got five points by Schulte and treys from both Kattie Savoy and Shelby Hochstein that dug the hole deeper as the Raiders trailed 59-22 after three periods.

Newcastle got four points from Brooke McCluskey in the fourth and a fieldgoal by Brittany Bruening but Wynot was relentless and fieldgoals by Zoey Heimes, Bailey Kuchta and Shelby Wieseler finished off the Lady Raiders, 65-29.

The Wynot Lady Blue Devils had little trouble with the Wausa Lady Vikings in the first round of SubDistricts played at Cedar Catholic on Tuesday.

The Lady Blue Devils looked in top form as they were dominant on both the offensive and defensive ends. Wynot raced to a 19-0 first quarter lead and cruised to the 64-29 win. The Blue Devils advanced to play Newcastle a 38-34 winner over Bloomfield in the other bracket.

Kattie Savoy was the zone buster for the Lady Devils in this game. She drained four three-point bombs and scored a season-high 18 points. Maggie Schulte worked the inside for 17 points and Bailey Kuchta had a solid game with 11 points and led the team with 6 rebounds.

Abbi Hegge was a bright spot for the Wausa Lady Vikings as she hit a trio of three pointers in the game and finished with 16 points.

Wynot got six points from Kattie Savoy in the opening quarter and a pair of put backs off offensive rebounds by Bailey Kuchta as they roared to a 19-0 early lead.

Abbie Hegge hit a pair of three pointers for Wausa in the second quarter to try and keep pace with the Lady Devils. Kattie Savoy cancelled her efforts with a  matching pair of three pointers for Wynot and Maggie Schulte went to work inside for 6 points as Wynot expanded their lead to 37-10 at the half.

The Lady Vikings offense came to life in the third quarter behind the 8 point efforts of Abbi Hegge and field goals by Torissa Claussen and Gabe Swanson. The Blue Devils would go to the free throw line to keep pace as they got a three pointer from Erica Burbach and connected on 7-10 from the charity stripe and maintained the 51-24 lead.

Wynot went on a 13-4 run in the final quarter to put away the Lady Vikings. Six more points by Schulte and Kattie Savoy’s fourth trey of the night did most of the damage. Wynot advanced with the 64-29 win.
