Coleridge girls open with L&C wins

COLERIDGE ‹ The Coleridge Lady Bulldogs started the 2007-08 girls¹ basketball season off the same way they ended the regular season in volleyball ‹ on a high note.
Coleridge rolled to a  big 61-43 win over the Boomfield Queen Bees here Thursday and defeated Allen 46-25 Friday.
Coleridge and Bloomfield battled pretty evenly in the opening frame, but the home team was able to take an 11-9 advantage after the first quarter.


The Lady Blue ripped off a 19-12 scoring run in the second frame to take a comfortable 30-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Both Coleridge¹s offense and defense worked to perfection as the second half opened, as the Lady Blue were able to paste a 19-4 run on the Queen Bees in the third quarter.
Reserves dominated the action in the final frame, allowing the visitors from the west to outscore the Lady Blue 18-12, but it wasn¹t enough to make much of a difference in the final outcome.
The Coleridge offense was led Thursday by a very balanced attack as four Coleridge athletes hit for double figures in the contest.
The team was led by Kelsey Papenhausen, who popped in a game-high 16 points.

Dana Hansen had a 12-point effort to lead the Lady Blue to a big 46-25 win over the Allen Lady Eagles here Friday.
Both teams put up a firm defensive effort keeping the score low with neither team posting more than 46 points.
A balanced attack once again paced Coleridge in the game.
Besides Hansen¹s 12 points, Kelsey Papenhausen aided the offense, adding 10 points. Taylor Olsen and  Sophie Wemhoff also had solid nights, hitting for nine points each.
The Lady Bulldogs rolled up 12 points in the first quarter, while limiting the visiting Eagles to nine. Coleridge added to its lead in the second frame, outscoring Allen 9-4 to take a 21-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The  Lady Blue kept the pressure on in the second half, outscoring Allen 25-12 over the final 16 minutes to earn the win.
Coleridge traveled to Hartington Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs will be in action again Friday when they host Newcastle.
