Cedar tops Crofton to win SubDistrict

WAUSA – Cedar Catholic defeated Crofton 55-43 Thursday for the SubDistrict C2-9 title.
In Cedar’s first game of the tourney, the Trojans defeated Plainview 80-39.
The Trojans got their offense started Thursday thanks to a Trevor Hamilton inside shot and a Zach Steffen basket. Cedar and Crofton then traded baskets evenly for most of the first frame until the Trojans put together a 6-1 run to close out the first frame.

The quarter was truly a back-and-forth affair as the two teams had five lead changes in the first eight minutes.
The first-quarter run was aided by James Kaiser’s two long bombs and a jumper as the Cedar freshman led the team in the early going with eight points. The Trojans also got a trey from Taylor Kathol in the opening frame.
A 7-0 Crofton run to open the second quarter quickly erased the deficit. The Warriors’ Dakota Miller finished the rally with a 12-foot jumper to give the Maroon a 20-18 advantage with 6:08 left to play in the half.
Two back-to-back bombs from downtown — the first from Kyle Klug and the next on a James Kaiser net-burner, quickly put the Trojans back out in front, 26-20. Zach Steffen, Kaiser and Klug all drove the lane for baskets to close out the first half with a 32-23 Cedar lead.
Cedar quickly expanded the lead to 14 points when the Trojans opened the second half with a Logan Feilmeier basket and a Zach Steffen trey. Tom Peitz got the Warriors on the board with a jumper, but Cedar came right back with a Kyle Klug drive to go up 39-25 midway through the third quarter. Crofton closed out the frame with a 9-2 run to cut the Cedar lead to just seven points heading into the final frame.
Tom Peitz reeled off five quick points to open the fourth frame, pulling his team to within two points, 41-39,  for the first time since the second quarter. That’s all the closer Crofton could get, though as Cedar responded with a Zach Steffen bomb to give the Trojans a 44-37 advantage. Cedar then closed out the game with an 11-6 run to seal the victory.
