Cedar Lady Trojans move to semifinals

LINCOLN — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans defeated second-seed Sutton in a close 49-44 battle to the end.

They will now play Homer, the upset winner over Lutheran High NE at 10:45 a.m. at the Pershing Center.

This marks the second year in a row Cedar Catholic has advanced to the C2 semifinals.

Cedar flexed its muscles from the start in Thursday’s tourney opener, rolling to a quick 6-0 lead. Dana Dickes got the scoring going with one of her hook shots to open the game. Katelyn Dickes followed that up with a jumper and Tracy Peitz hit a pair of foul shots to help Cedar earn the quick start.

Coach Jason Folkers’ crew threw  a full-court press at Sutton to keep them scoreless in the early going. Sutton finally scored their first points three minutes into the game when Jamie VanKirk nailed a pair of charity shots.

The two squads then went on a dry spell as Cedar missed the next five scoring opportnities and turned the ball over twice, while Sutton misfired on their next six attempts and had two turnovers.

VanKirk’s eight-foot jumper pulled the  Fillies out of their funk. With 1:33 left in the first frame, Sutton hit a pair of Maria VanKirk charity shots to knot the contest at 6-6. The contest didn’t stay tied for long, though, as Dana Dickes quickly drove the lane for the lay-in and then hit the ensuing foul shot to give Cedar the 9-6 advantage.Dana’s younger sister, Katelyn, then followed the old fashioned three-point play up with a three-pointer of her own, hitting a bomb from the left side to give the quick 12-6 lead.

Bombs by Tracy Peitz and Kendra Lammers and a Lexi Steffen shot under the basket helped Cedar stretch its lead to 10 points early in the second half, but Sutton called a timeout at that point to regroup.

The quick strategy session must have helped as Sutton was then able to erase the deficit with a 12-2 run to tie the contest at 24-2 with 1;36 left in the half. A Claire Bergen foul shot then gave the Fillies their first lead of the game. That lead didn’t las for long, though, as Dana Dickes responded with a pair of short jumpers to give Cedar the 28-25 halftime lead.

Cedar opened the second half by stretching its lead to five points on another Dana Dickes inside shot.

Two more drives up the middle by Dana Dickes and jumpers from Katelyn Dickes and Tracy Peitz stretched the lead to seven points for Cedar.

Sutton again made a run at Cedar in the final frame, closing to within one point, 39-38 on a pair of Claire Bergen foul shots.

Tracy Peitz knocked down a trey to give the Lady Trojans the momentum once again. Dana Dickes and Kendra Lammers then both drove the lane for lay ins to stretch the Cedar lead to six points. With just  over a minute left in the contest, Cedar then went into its stall and foul strategy to earn the win.
