Cedar boys pull upset of Luth NE

NORFOLK — The Cedar Catholic Trojans notched a huge upset win over previously once-beaten Lutheran High Northeast Saturday.
Cedar Catholic Coach Matt Steffen was happy his team was able to walk into the Eagles’ gym and dominate the game.
“This was really a big win for us.  Lutheran High has a very good team, they are experienced, talented and athletic,” he said. “They have beaten Pierce twice this year and Norfolk Catholic once and for us to go into their gym, where they play very well and win, is a huge accomplishment.”

Cedar and Lutheran High battled evenly in the first frame before Cedar took control in the second frame.
The Trojans also picked up an easy win last week over Battle Creek in Parents’ Night action Thursday.
Saturday’s contest started out as a back-and-forth affair with the Trojans finally earning a 10-8 first-quarter advantage. The tide turned in the second frame, though, as the Trojans put together a 15-9 run to take a commanding 35-17 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Trojans led by as many as 10 points during the offensive spurt.
The Eagles regrouped during the break and were able to put together a 14-11 run in the third quarter to cut Cedar’s lead to just five points heading into the final frame.
Cedar made sure the Eagle rally wouldn’t last, though, as the Trojans put together a 12-4 fourth-quarter spurt to seal the win.
“Our defense was tremendous, not giving up a single 3 pointer to a team that shoots pretty well,” Coach Steffen said.
It looks like the team is gelling at the right time, Steffen said.
“I like the chemistry and attitude of our team right now and hope to get on a roll heading into the post season next week.”
Cedar was led Saturday by Logan Feilmeier, who hit for 12 points. He also led the team on the boards with five rebounds.

Cedar opened the week with an easy 53-38 Parents’ Night win over Battle Creek.
It was a great way to send the seniors off, Steffen said.
“Each year on Parents’ Night, we have a traditition to start all seniors and try to reward some kids that work hard every day to make us a good basketball team,” Steffen said. “Kids like Josh Anderson, Zach Kathol and Matthew Leise, who are an important part of our team, but just don’t get many minutes in games, really deserve a lot of credit for their team attitude and work ethic.”
Cedar put together a solid run to close out the first frame and take a 12-5 lead. The Braves bounced back in the second frame to outscore Cedar 13-9 and whittle Cedar’s halftime lead to just three points —21-18.
“We executed our offenses well in the first half and took good shots, it was just one of those nights where we went cold for about five minutes in the first half and really let Battle Creek stay in the game,” Coach Steffen said.
Cedar stormed out of the locker room in the second half, tossing up 20 points to take control of the contest.
The Trojans outscored the Braves 12-6 in the final frame to seal the win.
Cedar was led by a balanced scoring attack. Logan Weinandt and James Kaiser both hit for 11 points. Grant Howell turned in a career-best 10-point effort. Taylor Kathol also turned in a career night as the sophomore reserve hit for seven points.
“Taylor Kathol and Grant Howell came off the bench and gave us some really quality minutes,” Steffen said.
