Board approved surveyor pay increase

PIERCE — The Pierce County Board of Commissioners enjoyed a short meeting with a light agenda when they met Oct. 28.

At the suggestion of Pierce County morticians, the board discussed paying only for cremations for county burials. After a study by County Clerk Shannon Wragge of what other counties do, it appears that Pierce County pays more for a county burial than most counties. Some pay nothing.

The board will meet with the two county morticians at the next meeting and then make a decision.

Board member Terry Wragge reported that Charles Hoffmann of rural Hadar has agreed to join Pierce County Planning Commission to fill the vacant spot previously held by a past Hadar resident.

The board is still seeking someone from the Plainview area. Anyone interested should call the Pierce County clerk for details.

County Surveyor LaVern Schroeder met with the board to discuss his rates for surveying county properties. Schroeder said he had not changed his rates since 1970. Schroeder requested a change to $45 per hour and said sometimes he has to have someone work with him. County Clerk Wragge said there is $6,000 in that budget fund.

The board approved a motion to pay the county surveyor $45 an hour as registered land surveyor and also pay his secretary $25 an hour.

The board expressed concern about not being able to get gravel. Chairman Jim Maas said he had several calls asking for gravel, but has not been able to get any because of machine breakdown at the pit. Maas said he has been told there will be gravel available soon.

In other business, the board:

— met in Board of Equalization session with County Assessor Peggy Wragge with no action taken.

— discussed disposing of the old backhoe now that they have purchased a new one and agreed to put the item on the next meeting agenda.

— approved an Underground Crossing for Todd Eckstrom (Bloomquist Plumbing and Electric) on 20-28-1 for a water line.
