Obituary – Rita Stevens

HARTINGTON — Rita Jane Stevens, 88, Wahoo, formerly of Hartington, died Feb. 28, 2008, in Wahoo.
A rosary and vigil service, led by Rev. John Pietramale, was held March 2 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington.
Mass of Christian burial was March 3 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she had been a member for 66 years, with Rev. Pietramale officiating.
Pallbearers were Rita’s granddaughters Mindy Bare, Tia Berend, Tracy Juffer, Erin Winkelman, Leah Stevens, Stephanie Riggen and Taylor Dreesen.
Burial was in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington.

Rita Jane Schulte was born to Alex and Anna (Stuckenhoff) Schulte May 22, 1920, in Wynot. She grew up in Wynot, moving to Hartington in 1941, when her father moved his family and drugstore to Hartington. She graduated from Wynot High School in 1937. She attended Wayne State College before teaching at the District 15 one-room country school near St. Helena.
She married Eugene John Stevens, son of Stephen and Veronica Stevens, Sept. 10, 1945, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington. Together, they raised their nine children while living and working in Hartington. Gene preceded her in death Jan. 2, 2001, after 55 years of marriage.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Rita and Merlin Hamilton, Custer, S.D.; Ann Kai, Tekamah, and her husband, Terry, Pender; Peg and Bob Brandt, Wahoo; Kathy and Steve Winkelman, Limon, Colo.; Patty Miller and fiancé Tony Ticknor, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; Steve and Jan Stevens, Columbus; Joe and Joyce Stevens, Speedway, Ind.; Chuck and Sheilah Stevens, Westfield, Ind.; son-in-law, Chuck Juffer, and wife, Susan, Greenwood, Ind.; 31 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Rose Schallert, North Hollywood, Calif.; Joan Waggoner, Lincoln; Leah Berglund and husband, Roland, Kearney; and Betty Wachter, Carlsbad, Calif.; brothers, Joe Schulte, Hartington, and Buzz Schulte and his wife, Joyce, Fallbrook, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Stevens; daughter, Susan Juffer, March 30, 2005; her parents; brother, Alex Schulte; and sisters, Beth Gregersen, Paula Dennis and Anne Kesterson.
Memorial contributions can be made in Rita’s name to the Cedar Catholic Endowment Fund.
