Obituary – Preston J. Thornburg

CLIFTON, Colo. — Preston J. Thornburg, 67, Clifton, Colo., died July 11, 2011, after a brief illness.
A small, casual service will be determined at a later date.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Mesa Funeral Service, Grand Junction, Colo.

Preston was born Feb. 24, 1944, to Kirk and Wilma (Short) Thornburg. Kirk worked on the Union Pacific Railroad at the time, so Preston was born in Wilcox, Wyo., in a railroad car. He always joked that he wasn’t born in a barn, but darn close to it. Later his family moved to the Encampment, Wyo., area where Preston graduated from high school in 1962. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1968. He was an avid “Pokes” fan and was accused many times of bleeding brown and gold. While attending the UW, Preston met Beth Nice, whom he married Aug. 28, 1964. Their 47-year relationship provided him with three children, 10 grandchildren and 1-1/2 great-grandchildren. Preston loved ALL children, and lived to spoil his grandchildren as all good grandfathers should.
Preston is survived by his wife, Beth; daughters and husbands, Tammy and Joe York,, Coleridge; Stacy and J.D. Hill, Collbran, Colo.; and his son and wife, Damon and Gia Thornburg, Bangkok, Thailand; his grandchildren, Emily Grace and Gary Carter, Christian, Bessie Jo, Genevieve, Kellen, Anamarie, Griffin, Ian, Lucy and Harlan; his great-grandchildren, Bentley and soon-to-be Francis; and his special dogs, Sophie and Emme.
Preston requested that in lieu of flowers and monetary donations, his friends and family go buy a good book, read it, and donate it to their local library.
