Obituary – Merle Raymond Loftis

LeMARS, Iowa — Merle Raymond Loftis, Jr., 69, LeMars, Iowa, died from injuries received in an automobile accident near Cherokee, Iowa, June 28, 2011.
Visitation was prior to service time Saturday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, South Sioux City,.
Services were July 2 at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, South Sioux City, with the Rev. Randall B. Knuth officiating.
Graveside services were July 2 at the City Cemetery, Coleridge.
Pallbearers were Jeff and Rick White; Rex Kelly; James Barnyord; Kevin Criddle and Jason Williams.

Merle was born June 28, 1942, in Coleridge, the son of Merle R. and Opal L. (Coulter) Loftis, Sr. He attended Coleridge High School. He drove for Schusters Trucking, LeMars, until retiring in 2008.
He married Mary L. Shanks, Sept. 30, 1971, in New Orleans, La.
He was a member of the Cherokee Ridge Runners. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his K-9 companion “Duke.”
Survivors include two sons and wives, Jeff and Sarah White and Rick and Laura White, both of Hutchinson, Kan.; five daughters and husbands, Teresa and Sam Driver and Tonja Loftis, all of Independence, Mo.; Bonnie Erickson and fiancé, Tim Thompson, St. Louis, Mo.; Shirley and Troy Mesenbrink, Sioux City, Iowa; Loretta and Rex Kelly, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; two sisters and husbands, LaVonne and Kenny McDonald, Jackson, and Cheryl and Ron Tauge, Murphy, N.C.; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary, Nov. 19, 2007, in LeMars, Iowa; and granddaughter, Ocean Loftis Bunch.
