John David Burke

OMAHA — John David Burke, 91, Omaha, formerly of Coleridge, died June 30, 2011, at the Immanuel Fontenelle Home, Omaha.
Visitation and a Vigil Service were Tuesday at the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church one hour prior to services.
Mass of Christian Burial will be July 6, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Coleridge, with the Rev. Jeffrey Loseke officiating.
Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Coleridge.

Pallbearers will be Martin Burke, John Burke, Gerald Burke, James Burke, Joseph Burke and Clair Guthrie.
Honorary Pallbearers will be John’s daughters, Eileen Burke, Mary Guthrie, Angela Benal and grandchildren.
John David Burke was born on a farm near Randolph, Aug. 29, 1919, to William and Anna (Shoemaker) Burke, who were originally from O’Neill. John farmed with his brother, Vincent Burke, west of Coleridge until he moved to Omaha in 1956. John worked at the Swift meat packing plant in Omaha for one year. While in Omaha, John met Rosemary O’Connor. John and Rosemary were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, south Omaha, Nov. 30, 1957. John and Rosemary raised their eight children on a farm west of Coleridge.
John was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, was a member of the church choir for over 50 years, and the Legion of Mary, and taught CCD. John also served on the school board of Hartington Cedar Catholic High School. John moved into Coleridge in 1994, and spent much of his time volunteering at Park View Haven Nursing Home. In 2001, John moved to Lincoln to be closer to his children and grandchildren. In the fall 2007, John moved to Omaha and resided at the New Cassel Retirement Center.
John is survived by his eight children, Martin Burke, Salina, Kan.; John Burke, Jr., Rapid City, S.D.; Eileen Burke, Lincoln; Gerald and his wife Mary Burke (Damon), Omaha; Mary and husband Clair Guthrie, Lincoln; Angela Benal, Lincoln; James Burke, Omaha; and Joseph Burke, Lincoln; 12 grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucrecia Mysenberg, Columbus, and Mary Coring, Omaha.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosemary, June 7, 1992, at the age of 66; infant son, Francis; three brothers, Leo (Father Ambrose), Paul and Vincent Burke; and sister Loretta Wisniski.
