Obituary – Edmund Dettmer Sr.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Edmund F. Dettmer Sr., 86, died Nov. 20, 2007, in Catherine Kasper House, Donaldson, Ind.
Visitation and a rosary were Nov. 23 at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend.
Mass of Christian Burial was Nov. 24 at St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend, with Rev. Michael Heintz officiating.


Graveside services and burial followed at Highland Cemetery.
Edmund was born March 15, 1921, in Bow Valley, to George and Theresa (Frigge) Dettmer and moved to Donaldson, Ind., in 1935, and resided there for 10 years. He married Catherine R. Kierein June 6, 1945. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage until her death Oct. 27, 2007. He was honorably discharged in 1945, from the United States Coast Guard, where he served on the Atlantic Coast and the Mediterranean Sea during World War II. He retired in 1986 from A.M. General Corp., where he worked as an inspector.
He was an active member of St. Matthew Cathedral, where he ushered for many years, and was a member and Past President of the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the German Club.
Survivors include, five sons and spouses, Edmund F. Dettmer, Iowa City, Iowa; Richard and Laura Dettmer, Huntertown, Inc.; Dennis and Maurita Dettmer, Hazleton, Pa.; Charles and Ellen Dettmer, South Bend, Ind.; and James and Laura Dettmer, Sonoita, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Dettmer; a sister, Sister Richeld, P.H.J.C., Donaldson, Ind.; and two brothers, John and wife, Ann Dettmer, Plymouth, Ind., and Rev. Alfred Dettmer, Munster, Ind.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Dettmer, in 1997; and four brothers, Theophil Dettmer, Msgr. Aloysius Dettmer, Clement Dettmer and Leonard Dettmer.
