Randolph boys claim Holiday crown

RANDOLPH — The Randolph boys basketball team has been up and down in the early going this season, but they played a pair of solid games on their home court over the holidays and got back to the .500 mark, as they came away with a tournament championship.

The Cardinals defeated Plainview, 65-25, Thursday and held on for a 60-55 win over Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Friday evening, to come away with the first-place trophy at the Randolph Holiday Tournament.

The Cardinals were hot in the early going of their opening-round matchup against the Pirates, racing to a 30-point halftime lead on their way to the easy win.

Randolph shot the ball well, particularly from the outside, and rode the hot hands of seniors, Logan Nordhues and Andrew Schnoor, and junior, Judson Hixson, all of whom finished the evening in double figures.

“We did a great job of moving the ball and knocking down shots,” coach Mark Anderson said. “Also, our defense and rebounding was a plus.”

Nordhues led all scorers with a game-high 21 points and also had a team-high nine rebounds to go with five assists. Hixson finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Schnoor had 11 points and a team-best six assists.

Merrix Denn added six points in the winning effort, Mason Nordhues had five points and four rebounds, and Mason Stubbs chipped in five points and four assists.

Friday’s championship game was a close battle from start to finish. The Cardinals got out to a two-point lead after one period, but the Bulldogs returned the favor and tied things up at 31-31 at intermission.

Randolph continued to match the Bulldogs in the second half, then came up with some key plays down the stretch to claim the win and improve to 4-4 on the season.

“We did a nice job of executing down the stretch and making free throws the last two minutes of the game,” Anderson said.

Logan Nordhues had a game-high 24 points and added nine boards and five assists to the winning effort. Stubbs finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Schnoor put in nine points and had a pair of assists, while Mason Nordhues added eight points and six rebounds, Hixson put in six points and had six boards and Denn had two points.

Randolph was back in action Tuesday at home against Homer and will host Creighton Friday, before traveling to Allen for a Monday night matchup. They play at Hartington-Newcastle Tuesday.
