Development group has positive view of 2013, looks forward to 2014

PIERCE — The Pierce County Board of Commissioners met Jan. 6, for its first meeting of the new year, with sub-zero temperatures and a blustery wind to welcome them.

The board quickly reorganized by adopting a motion to keep all offices and appointments the same. Commissioner Jim Maas was reelected board chairman and Commissioner Terry Wragge will remain chairman of the Board of Equalization. Maas will complete his eighth year as board chairman when his term ends Jan. 1, 2014. Other appointments are listed at the end of this news item.

The first order of business was to meet with the Pierce County Economic Development group for an update on what the group has been doing. Members Robert Wehrer and Jim Schmit and Executive Director Joe Grof gave the board copies of what they referred to as the “PCED Barometer of 2013.”

The “barometer” showed potential new prospects (number only), visits to new prospects inside and out of Pierce County, new investments, new employers committed and new job created. According to the group, eight new jobs were created in the existing business activity and 17 in the business attraction activity. The group told the board they will have a web site up and running by Feb. 1, with a link to connect to the Pierce County web site.

The board thanked the group for the update.

The board discussed whether to apply for the scrap tire grant for 2014 and all agreed it would be a good idea to do so to help get rid of all old tires in the county. It was noted that just because Pierce County applies for the grant there is no guarantee they will get it.

In other business, the board:

— met with County Assessor Peggy Wragge with no action taken.

— received and approved the county treasurer’s semi-annual statement from County Treasurer Chris Bahr.

— approved the Robyn Watson-Kopp lot split in Part NW¼NW¼ 34-28-3.

— tabled the 2014 one-and six-year road plan discussion.
