UMW guest day to feature hat program

United Methodist Women will host their annual guest day on Tuesday, September 10. It will take place at the church and begin at 7 p.m.

The evening’s program will be presented by Helen Waring Johnson of Geneva. Her programs — which number more than 100 — feature a different hat for each of the musical medleys she performs. She calls her presentations her “musical hats show.” Guests next Tuesday are invited to wear a hat of their own.

Her programs had their beginnings a retirement homes. Mrs. Johnson says she has always liked music and singing, so she started calling retirement homes and senior citizen centers to see if there was an interest. In a short time her travels took her allover the eastern part of Nebraska and into Iowa, singing songs from “The Great American Songbook” while wearing a variety of hats.

For songs like “Singing In The Rain” and “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” she’s worn a rain hat she found in her closet. When singing “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie,” “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad” and “This Train Is Bound For Glory,” her hat was a striped engineer’s hat.

Mrs. Johnson said her career took off much faster than she ever expected, and she sometimes finds herself doing two or three shows in one day, often in different towns.

Lunch will be served after the program.
