Paul Gubbels competes at state wrestling meet

OMAHA — Paul Gubbels competed at the state wrestling meet held in Omaha on Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 16 to 18.
Paul qualified for the state meet by placing in the top four at the district meet the week before.  Paul, wrestling in the Class D 138-lb. bracket, finished the tournament with one win and two losses.
Paul lost to Brett Riggs of North Platte St. Patrick’s in the first round of action, but came back and picked up a pin over Michael Stackpole of Weeping Water in the first round of consolation action.  Paul then lost his next match to Derek Wortman of Creighton and was eliminated from the tournament.

“I thought that Paul wrestled well at the state meet,” complimented Coach Larry McKenna. “We knew coming in that he would have a tough first round match, but that he had a good chance of coming back through the consolation rounds.
