School is out, but training and competition continue for Bessmer

Jared poses with his medals from Verdigre and the Laugh-and-a-Half Marathons.

OSMOND — Although most sports competitions for high school students ended in May, that is not the case for one Osmond High School student. Jared Bessmer, who will be a junior at OHS this fall, has been in several competitions this summer.
On Saturday, May 27, Jared competed in the Crofton Assisted Living Committee’s 5K run, an annual event which raises funds to benefit the Crofton Assisted Living building project. Jared placed first in the under 18 age group and second overall at Crofton.
Jared competed in a 10K run at Verdigre during Kolache Days on Saturday, June 10. With more than 130 runners participating, Jared came in first in the 20-and-under men’s division and first overall.
On Saturday, June 17, Jared competed in Laugh-and-a-Half Marathon during the Great American Comedy Festival in Norfolk. Some 600 runners compete in this marathon each year. This year, Jared placed first in the 15-18 age group, 13th overall in the men’s division and 15th for men and women. Jared noted that another Osmond runner, Scot Gubbels, also participated in the Laugh-and-a-Half Marathon. Scot placed 15th overall for the men’s division.
