Open Houses set for Sunday

Repubican and SeniorsOSMOND — Open houses at side-by-side locations in downtown Osmond are planned for Sunday, May 1 — Osmond Senior Citizen Center and Osmond Republican.

Both events will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. Cookies and coffee will be served during the open house hours. The open houses are a joint venture with the HOME Team Polka and Pie event at the city auditorium from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Osmond Senior Citizen Center, now located at 336 North State Street, opened its permanent doors in 1978 in a former café situated across the street east from its present home. A senior center for Osmond was organized by “interested persons” in 1977. Early meetings and socials took place at the American Legion Hall.

From the beginning, work to establish and maintain a center has been mostly on a volunteer basis. It is open daily for friends to gather, visit, and enjoy card playing and other activities. Monthly birthday parties and potluck dinners are held. With community help, the “seniors” moved to their new home in early March. The group has its own officers and board of directors to govern its activities.

Born with the town in 1890, Osmond Republican has had several “homes” in the community.
