Large area of country crippled by ice and snow

Activity in a large part of the country came to a halt this past weekend when Mother Nature sent a mixture of rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow. What came down depended on where one lives.
Locally, Sunday activities were pretty much normal until evening. Rain began falling that evening and continued intermittently into Monday. The result was a glaze of ice — making driving hazardous, and walking was discouraged.
While it was bad enough here, one only had to turn on the TV and observe a tangled mass of trees and branches mixed in with power poles and wires. Northeast Nebraska Public Power District at Wayne — which serves Osmond and the rural area — indicated only isolated individual outages and only about 10 by Tuesday morning. Classes at Osmond schools were cancelled on Monday and Tuesday as were other community activities.
