Laurel’s Austin Roach wins state match

LCC’s Austin Roach gets his hand raised in victory after earning a win at the State Class D wrestling tournament in Omaha.

OMAHA — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge wrestler Austin Roach got off to a good start during the first day of the Class D State Wrestling Tournament at the  CenturyLink Center here.

Roach, wrestling in the 170-pound division, earned an opening-round win with a 19-2 technical fall.

He then dropped his quarterfinal match to Brian Scarff of Friend. Scarff has notched 45 wins this season, while only losing four matches.

The loss drops Roach into the Consolation Round. He will next see action on Friday.

Two other LCC wrestlers are also competing at the State meet.

Chris Haydon, competing in the 160-pound class, lost his first-round match, but will be wrestling in the consolation rounds on Friday.

Ethan Hirschman lost his first-round match in the 285-pound class. He will also  wrestle in the consolation bracket Friday.
