Wynot squeaks out double OT win

HARTINGTON — The Wynot Blue Devils overcame a 10-point first-half deficit and two overtimes to defeat the Elkhorn Valley Falcons for the championship of the D-2 8 boys subdistrict played at the Cedar Catholic gym Thursday.

The Blue Devils kept themselves in the game by hitting 10-14 free throws while the Falcons only managed 3-6 attempts from the charity stripe
The end of the game heroics of the Blue Devil defense were huge in this contest as they  held the Falcons scoreless in both the overtime periods.
Cody Stappert led the Blue Devils with 15 points and seven rebounds. Austin Wieseler hit a pair of big three pointers in the second half on his way to nine points and Devin Wieseler contributed eight points to Wynot’s offensive efforts.
Elkhorn Valley was paced by Bryce Potter with 15 points and Drew Rautenberg with 13 points, while Cody Napier also notched double figures with his 10 points.
Wynot would get five points from Cody Stappert in the first quarter. Elkhorn Valley got seven points from Drew Rautenberg and five points from Bryce Potter as they roared to an early 16-9 lead.
Wynot’s three-point shooting, which had been a key to the team’s success, went cold in the first half as they went 0-10 from behind the arc before halftime. Nathan Wieseler had a pair of baskets from the low block area for Wynot in the second quarter.
Elkhorn Valley kept the pressure on with four more points from Potter and a Cody Napier three-pointer as the Falcons increased their lead to 27-17 at the half.
Drew Rautenberg’s lay-in increased the Falcons lead to 12 points early in the third period but then the Blue Devil started to battle back. Six points off the offensive glass  by Cody Stappert and four points by Devin Wieseler as well as a last second three pointer from Austin Wieseler deep in the left corner helped the Blue Devil cut the Falcons lead to 33-32 with one period to play.
Austin Wieseler opened the fourth quarter with another trey this one from the top of key to give the Blue Devils their first lead of the game. Bryce Potter put he Falcon back up with a pair of mid range jumpers. Chad Boeckman hit a short jumper on the right baseline to tie the game at 42-42. Both teams missed last second shots and the game went into overtime.
In the first overtime neither team scored.
In the second overtime Chad Boeckman hit a conventional three point play with a put back and free throw and the the Blue Devils hit 4 of 5 free throws. Wynot’s defense shut down the Falcons offensive in the second extra period as they advanced to the District game next Tuesday.

HARTINGTON — The Wynot Blue Devils jumped on the Wausa Vikings in the first half and after taking a 37-16 halftime lead Tuesdday, they cruised to a 56-37 win in their first round game of Class D-2 8 SubDistrict at Cedar Catholic.
The Blue Devils threw a balanced attack at the Vikings led by Michael Wieseler with 14 points and eight points each from Cody Stappert, Chad Boeckman and Devin Wieseler.
Wausa’s Trevor Wakeley had the hot hand for the Vikings as he rained in five long-range baskets for his 15 points and Spencer Rosberg contributed eight to their teams totals.
Chad Boeckman controlled the paint for the Blue Devils in the first quarter and notched six points in close. Chris Schmidt and Austin Wieseler each had a three-pointer as Wynot raced to an early 21-9 lead. Trevor Wakeley then hit a pair of bombs from behind the arc for the Vikings.
Austin Wieseler hit a second trey to open the second period and five points by Michael Wieseler and a pair of baskets down low from Cody Stappert kept the Blue Devils’ momentum rolling as they pushed their lead to 37-16 at the half.
Trevor Wakeley hit a pair of three-pointers early in the third quarter to cut into the Blue Devil lead, but Michael Wieseler erupted for seven points late in the period to keep the margin at 48-26 going into the final quarter.
Austin Conn drained a three-pointer and Spencer Rosberg dropped in a pair of treys on his way to a seven-point effort in the final quarter as the Vikings went on an 11-8 run.
The Blue Devils got fieldgoals from Devin Wieseler, Jackson Sudbeck and Chad Boeckman to ward off the come-back attempt by the Vikings who had dug themselves into too big of a hole and Wynot advanced to play Elkhorn Valley in the finals with the 56-37 win.
