Wynot claims a first round Tny. win

Wynot’s Michael Wieseler drives around the defense during State Tournament action last week in Lincoln. The Blue Devils earned a first-round win over Pleasanton Thursday.

LINCOLN— The Wynot Blue Devils picked up only their second-ever State Tournament win here Thursday.
The Blue Devils were not able to taste victory again, though, as they fell in the semifinal game and again in the third-place game.

Sometimes the disappointment of losing a chance at the state championship results in the consolation game that turning out to be of less quality than the coaches would like. That was not the case in the battle for third place between the Wynot Blue Devils and the Sterling Jets on Saturday at the North Star Gym in Lincoln. The Blue Devils might have been looking for a little revenge as it was the Jets that defeated them from the state football playoffs this last fall.
For whatever reason this game turned into a real dogfight as it went down to the wire. Jake Wirthele would hit a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds on the clock to give Sterling the 59-56 win. The Blue Devils had controlled the tempo of the game until the furious fourth quarter rally by the Jets as they found their range from three point land and erased a seven-point Wynot lead to steal the win. Wynot would take fourth place and finish with a fine 24-4 season record.
Wynot was lead in scoring by Devin Wieseler and Michael Wieseler with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Sterling, besides Jake Wirthele’s late heroics, got a game-high 17 points from their 6’7 senior center Connor Malone to lead the Jets.
Sterling got eight points from Connor Malone and three-pointers from Austin Magill and Klay Heusman to spark their offense in the opening quarter.
Wynot would counter with treys and five points each from Davis Wieseler and Devin Wieseler and four points from the freethrow line by Michael Wieseler to take a 20-19 lead in the fast-paced first quarter.
The Blue Devils kept the pressure on in the second quarter with four points from Nathan Wieseler on the inside and a three pointer from Jackson Sudbeck to lead them on a 17-11 run to earn a 37-30 halftime advantage.
The scoring pace slowed in the third quarter for both teams. Sterling got four points from Mike Lucas and a trey by Colin VanGromagen and Wynot got fieldgoals from Chad Boeckman and Devin Wieseler and hit 8-9 freethrows to maintain their lead at 49-42.
Chad Boeckman would contribute a fieldgoal down low and a banked jumper from the freethrow area for Wynot in the final quarter.
Sterling whittled away at the Blue Devil lead with four more points by Connor Malone and three pointers by Jake Wirthele and Klay Heusman to tie the score at 56-56 with under a minute to play.
Sterling turned the ball over and Wynot missed a fieldgoal and a jump ball struggle on the ensueing rebound giving Sterling the ball back. Sterling burned the clock and Jake Wirthele hit a deep three from the left wing with 1.5 seconds left to claim the lead. The Blue Devils’ long full-court pass was intercepted and the Jets earned the 59-56 comeback win.

Prior to the game it was the Blue Devils game plan to hold Giltner’s big man and leading scorer Drew Ott down and force the Hornets to rely on their perimeter players to beat them.
Wynot controlled Ott holding him to 10 points, eight below his season average, but the Hornet bench stepped up and hit key three-pointers in the second half to steal the win.
