Wynot boys advance to state tny.

NORFOLK — The Wynot Blue Devils did what they’ve done all year long.
They went into last week’s District title game as the underdog and walked away with the victory over the highly-rated O’Neill St Mary’s Cardinals.
The win puts the Wynot boys in the state tournament for only the third time in school history.

The Devils used a dominating inside game to defeat O’Neill St. Mary’s and punch their ticket to the State Tournament.
The Blue Devils never felt comfortable in this one as there were 10 lead changes and Wynot would use the free throw line in the final quarter to secure the 54-49 win.
St. Mary’s showed they  live or die by the three pointers. In this game they went 9-30 from three-point land and it was not good enough to counter the strong inside game of the Blue Devils.
Cody Stappert had a  break out game for Wynot as he consistently worked the low block and the offensive glass to score 20 points and grab 13 rebounds. Chad Boeckman and Michael Wieseler were also in double figures with 10 points each.St. Mary’s was lead by Kyle Eby who hit a trio of treys on his way to 13 points. Tiat Sibbel had a big first half scoring all of his 12 points before the half. Dereck Blumenstock hit three treys as well for a nine-point effort.
The two teams both started out hot. St. Mary’s got six points from Tait Sibbel and three pointers from Kyle Eby and Dereck Blumenstock. Wynot countered with eight points in the paint from Cody Stappert and four points from the inside by Chad Boeckman to earn a 15-14 first quarter lead.
Wynot got four points each from Michael Wieseler and Cody Stappert in the second quarter. O’Neill however got six points from Tait Sibbel and Tyler Timmerman’s three pointer tied the score at 25-25 at the half.
Blumenstock and Eby both drained treys for the Cardinals to give them an early lead in the third quarter. Michael Wieseler drained a three on his way to five points and a Cody Stappert lay-in helped the Blue Devils take the lead at 37-34.
St. Mary’s got bombs from Ty Eiler, Kyle Blumenstock and Kyle Eby to rally their team in the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals had no answer for the inside game of Cody Stappert as he hit for six points and Chad Boeckman connected for four points with a putback of an offensive rebound and pair of freethrow. Devin Wieseler drained a trey from the left wing and Wynot made 6-8 freethrows in the final minutes to seal the 54-49 win.
Wynot advanced to state to take on Pleasanton in a 8:45 game at Lincoln High on Thursday night.
