Sr. Legion team tops Madison

HARTINGTON — The Hartington American Legion Seniors found out Friday exactly why Creighton earned its way into the 2010 American Legion state championship game.
Creighton jumped on Hartington pitching early, then used some stellar mound work of their own to keep the Hartington offense at bay enroute to a 10-0 win during Elkhorn Valley Conference semifinal round action here. Creighton went on to earn the Elkhorn Valley League title.

Creighton figured out starting pitcher Aaron Steffen right from the start, earning back to back first-inning doubles off of Hartington’s starter. Ryan Mithies and Brendon Becker both doubled and scored off of Steffen.
The visitors took a 3-0 lead in the second frame thanks to walks to Taryn Boyer and Andrew Holton and a Ryan Mitties RBI double.
Steffen and the Hartington defense managed to shut down Creighton for the next three innings. However, Hartington’s offense wasn’t able to get anything going of their own.
Creighton finally got to Steffen in the sixth frame, chasing him off the mound in favor of Keenan Sudbeck. Sudbeck ended up giving up two hits and six runs as Creighton took the win.
Steffen suffered the loss. He gave up five hits and three runs, while walking four in his five innings of work. He also struck out five Creighton batters on the night.

Hartington earned an 8-4 win over Neligh here Wednesday to advance to Friday’s Elkhorn Valley League semifinal game against Creighton.
Hartington plated the first run of the night, scoring after Cody Stappert and Mitchell Bruening singled and Ty Uhing walked to load the bases for Kellyn Dump. Dump then drove in Stappert with a chopper past third base.
Neligh knotted the score at 1-1 in their half of the third frame, but Hartington fired right back.
Hartington used a two-out rally to score four runs in the third frame and take a 5-1 lead. Frank Herbolsheimer’s walk started things out. Cody Stappert then blasted a double past the defense to score him. Ty Uhing’s extra base hit then plated Stappert. Mitchell Bruening singled, moved to second on Nick Uhing’s single and came home on Kellyn Dump’s single.
Aaron Steffen got things started in the fourth frame when he singled, then stole second base. Ryan Boeckman then singled to drive him in.
The local team put up two insurance runs in the final frame. Keenan Sudbeck reached base on an error then worked his way around the bases to score on Aaron Steffen’s RBI double. Steffen then scored on a wild pitch.
