Randolph can’t slow speedy Pawnee

LINCOLN — The Randolph Cardinals looked unbeatable in the first seven minutes of Thursday’s Class D1 state tourney opener here.
Pawnee City turned up the heat after that and rolled to a huge 66-37 win to advance to Friday’s semifinal contest and send the Cardinals home for the season.

Pawnee City advanced to take on Howells in Friday’s state semifinal game. Howells won that game then went on to win the state title.
Pawnee started Thursday’s contest with a quick jumper from Erik Derby. The Cardinals responded quickly, though, as Clinton Lackas fired a long range shot to put the Cards on top 3-2. Nolan Nordhues then drew a foul and hit both shots to put Randolph on top 5-2.
Another Clinton Lackas trey gave the Cards an 8-2 lead and the Cards looked to have everything under control.
Garrett Borcher ended a four-minute Pawnee scoring drought when he nailed a short jumper. Thomas Pearson then banged home a three-pointer to pull the Indians to within one point, 8-7, with just over two minutes left in the first frame.
Randolph’s Grant Anderson drove in for an eight-foot jumper  to give the Cards a three-point lead, 10-7 with just under a minute left.

The wheels came off of the Cardinal defensive machine at that point as a 20-second spurt by the Indians turned a good Randolph quarter into a four-point deficit.
The Cards were called for a foul and Garrett Borcher nailed both shots to again pull within one point. The Indians then forced a Randolph turnover and Hadley Sejkora took advantage of the Randolph defense to nail a three, giving the Indians their first lead since the early seconds of the contest. Sejkora then swiped the ball from the Cardinals and cruised in for a quick jumper to give the Indians a 14-10 advantage as the buzzer sounded.
Pawnee City never allowed the Cards to get back into the game from there, outscoring Randolph 21-8 in the second frame to take a 35-18 advantage into the halftime break.
