HARTINGTON — Leigh Haselhorst has always loved going to school. And for the next about 30 years, she can look forward to spending her time in the classroom.

Haselhorst will start her career this fall at Hartington Public as the third grade teacher. She replaces Kelli Grube who taught for more than 20 years here.

“I want to work with children every day and make an impact on their lives,” she said.

Haselhorst was born and raised in Lincoln. She attended grade school at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ and high school at Pius X.

After graduating in 2008, Haselhorst attended Wayne State College and majored in biology. Her initial career choice was to become a nurse practitioner.

“I knew I wanted a profession where I worked with people and could help them,” she said.

Haselhorst realized she loved working with kids, though, and there was nothing better than seeing a child have fun and learn at the same time.

This experience and the fact her father, Randy, is a high school biology teacher in Lincoln and brother, Matt, a history teacher in Lexington helped Haselhorst make her decision.

Toward the end of her freshman year, she switched majors from biology to early childhood and took summer classes to finish in four years.
