Local couple enjoys volunteering at hospital

HARTINGTON — For the past four years, one Hartington couple has been leaving their mark on both staff members and patients at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D.

Leroy and Glenda Hansen are part of TEAM, one of the many volunteering programs at Avera. They spend one afternoon a week at the hospital and work to make the staff’s day a little less hectic and the patient’s stay a little better.

“The people really appreciate what you do,” Leroy said. “We get a lot of thanks from the patients and people we work with.”

Hummel said the TEAM volunteer program has been going on for about 20 years. The TEAM office is open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and volunteers work either an 8 a.m.-noon or noon-3 p.m. shift. Currently, 42 people are part of the program.
