HNS students map out honors

Cole Bensen, Keeley Wiepen, Daniel Steffen, Jessica Opfer and Dayton Sudbeck recently competed in the local level of the National Geographic Bee at Hartington-Newcastle Public School, with sixth grade student Daniel Steffen, son of Brian and Rose Steffen, earning championship honors. Other class winners were: eighth grade, Keeley Wiepen; seventh grade, Jessica Opfer, fifth grade, Dayton Sudbeck; and fourth grade, Cole Bensen.

This is the first round in the 28th annual National Geographic Bee. The school winners, including Daniel, have taken a state qualifying test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee in March 2017.

The Nebraska State Bee is held in Omaha, The top finishers in each state will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., in May to participate in the Bee national championship for college scholarships.
