Candlelight Christmas draws in huge crowd

HARTINGTON — The streets of Hartington turned into a sparkling winter wonderland Friday.

Christmas lights glittered from downtown doorways and windows. Christmas music filled the air.

In spite of the cold temperatures the sidewalks and streets were filled with people of all ages.

Young children were laughing and running around while adults took time to say “hello” and visit with friends and neighbors.

Candlelight Christmas here reminds Cynthia Miller of some of the scenes caught on canvas by well-known artist Norman Rockwell.

“Everyone comes to town for the Candlelight Christmas,” Miller said. “It is like a Norman Rockwell scene.”

Former Hartington mayor Bill Yates was happy to see how good the downtown area looked for the 13th annual event.

“The new street lights make the downtown look really nice,” Yates said. “The Candlelight Christmas events we have are absolutely wonderful.”

George Hirschbach, who serves as the Cedar County Attorney, has taken in every Candlelight Christmas since the event began.
