Area couple offers good relationship advice for Valentine’s Day

HARTINGTON —  Love and relationships are on most people’s minds these days with Valentine’s Day on the horizon,

Joe and Betty Schaefer know quite a bit about both.

They have enjoyed doing things together during their 41-year marriage.

The couple has done a lot of traveling over the years.  Joe and Betty have been through parts of Mexico and Canada, traveled to Germany, visited Rome and have been to almost every state in the U.S.

“We made a point of being in every state – we made it to every state except for Hawaii,” Betty said. “Joe told me we will be going to Hawaii as soon as they build the bridge.”

The couple’s trip to Alaska brought back a lot of memories for Joe, who had previously lived in Alaska.

They went back to the place where Joe had worked and Joe was even able to find the land-lady he had when he lived in Alaska close to 30 years earlier.

Betty was impressed with Alaska.

“We were there in July and it was a little cold but it was beautiful,” Betty said. “All of the trees,  and the wild flowers along side the roads were just beautiful.”

Joe still remembers how cold it could get and how he dealt with getting his truck started in the extreme cold temperatures during his time working in Alaska.

“It could be 57 degrees below zero. That wasn’t always easy,” Joe said.

A highlight of Joe and Betty’s traveling years was spending five months every winter in Texas.

Joe and Betty have good memories and enjoyed the number of miles they traveled together.

“It was mutual – we both liked to travel,” Joe said.
